Empowering our Communities

While Wah Mei School’s history is rooted in early childcare and education, we are also a long-standing member of the Sunset neighborhood.

As a 50-year-old service provider in the Sunset District, we have long been committed to local families in this neighborhood.

As an institution born out of the civil rights movement, we believe that in order for a community to thrive, its members must have equal and meaningful access to resources and services.

We stand committed to supporting our neighbors and ensuring that residents have access to the services they need to improve their quality of life.

With that said, we will continue to be an advocate for issues that matter: affordable housing, child care and education, quality health and social services, and programs that keep our residents safe.

In all of our work we prioritize the following:

  • Engaging our Sunset community bilingually and biculturally,

  • Uplifting the voice of our community

  • Collaborating with people and organizations to create a better future

Wah Mei School is a founding partner of:

District 4 Youth & Families Network

Created in 2018 in partnership with youth and family serving organizations to increase services and improve the quality of life of Sunset residents. Through this work, the coalition promotes greater civic and community engagement amongst diverse, low-income, vulnerable and disenfranchised members of our community.

Sunset Safety Network

Formed in 2022 to coordinate safety services and resources. This program strengthens coordination between City agencies & community groups to enhance public safety in D4, counter crimes targeting the Asian community, improve cultural & linguistic competency, and strengthen cross-racial solidarity.

Sunset Chinese Cultural District

Legislated in 2021 to protect the broad array of tangible and intangible elements that define the Sunset’s cultural character — buildings, plazas, parks, murals, festivals, traditions, and groups at risk of displacement. The SCCD is the 9th cultural district citywide and the only one located on the west side.
